Description |
|
Withymead,
a Georgian house beside the River Exe outside Exeter in Devon, was
the home of Gilbert and Irene Champernowne, who turned it, during the Second
World War, into a unique sanctuary of healing for people in mental
distress.
A residential therapeutic community made up of staff as well as patients, Withymead
pioneered the use of art therapy and Jungian analysis in a family setting.
This is an intimate and dramatic account of a remarkable achievement written
by a psychiatrist who knew the community well and is able to present it in
the context of its time.
